A trip to Northern California is lovely, but add an additional side trip to the ultimate in relaxing spots and you will question why you haven’t been living what is seemingly “the” life right then and there.
You find yourself in Napa and are immediately taken to a whole new world. It’s one of days gone by where your cellphone “conveniently” doesn’t get service, the weather is always just right and you lose yourself in awe of just how beautiful this one place can be.
No complaints here. It was precisely what I needed. I often find that I don’t power down too much these days. In Napa, you realize that you can be disconnected and you will survive.
It’s delightful, there is no doubt about that and I went at just the right time – late September, when the Harvest was beginning to near its end. I was there for a dear friend’s wedding and our group turned the weekend into a destination trip. We stayed in St. Helena just about an hour and a half outside of San Francisco. I highly recommend checking on one of the local B&Bs in town.
What to do you ask?
Kick-off the day with a scrumptious farm-to-table brunch at Farmstead while sipping on a variety of Bloody Mary concoctions to help cure any post wine tour symptoms you my experience. and it was beyond amazing!
Then? Wine tasting. Sip, walk the vineyards, sip and then sip some more. We Wine tasting at Silver Oak is unlike any other tasting I have done before. Even if you are not a red wine connoisseur, you will find their Cabernets and their Cabernet Sauvignon blends to be delicious. The gentlemen that gave our tour were not only knowledgeable but they were quite the talkers, we almost took them with us on the tour!
Next on the stop make sure to get your Lucille Ball on and stomp grape post wine tour at the Grgich Hills Estate. Stomping of the grapes might be an old-age approach to making wine but this was such an enjoyable experience!
We unfortunately did not have a chance to have lunch at Gotts, but my understanding is that they have one of the best burgers ever. I’d also try one of their thick, creamy milkshakes! On your drive back to San Francisco make sure to swing by Boon Fly Café for their absolutely delectable Boon Fly Donuts and a Cuppa Joe, it should be the only way to start your day.
Lastly, dress accordingly. Don’t forget that you’re in Northern Cali, it’s gets a bit chilly in the evening so be sure to pack a jacket of some nature or grab one of your new fall sweaters that you’ve been dying to wear this season.
